The Rise and Fall of Phage Therapy
•1915 - Twort discovers phages.
•1916 - d'Herelle names them “Bacteriophages” (a day
before his daughter was born).
•1919 - d'Herelle conducts 1st experiment in Chickens.
•August 1919 – First human cured from dysentery.
•1926 - d'Herelle was nominated 10 times for Nobel Prize and it was clear
that it is only a matter of time until he gets it.
•1927 – The Cholera death toll was reduced from
60% to 8% in villages in India by adding phages to the
wells.
•1925 - 1937– Hundreds of people are cured from a variety of bacteria.
•1934 - d'Herelle moves to Georgia after being invited by
Stalin himself to establish a phage therapy institute with
his friend Prof. George Eliava. d'Herelle believes in the communist paradise with all his heart.
•1928 – the “9/11” of phage therapy: Alexander Fleming discovers
penicillin, d'Herelle will never get a Nobel Prize.
•1937 - George Eliava falls in love with the wrong girl (Lavrenty Beria’s love);
he and his wife are executed.
•1937 - D'Herelle ran for his life to Paris and never returned to Georgia. His
book is banned from distribution the USSR.
•1939 - WWII. The age of antibiotics begins.
•1940s - Eli Lilly decides to leave phage therapy and concentrate on
antibiotics.
•1949 - d'Herelle dies a forgotten man; phage therapy is abandoned in the western world.
•1950s - Phage therapy is conducted in Eastern Europe,
mainly in Georgia and Poland.
1960s - Félix d’Hérelle's name appeared on a list published by the Nobel
Foundation of scientists who had been worthy of receiving the
Nobel Prize but did not.
1961 - Liz Taylor was treated with phages for staphylococcus pneumonia during the filming of 'Cleopatra' and her life were saved.
